Reports of Win2K Bug Hasty

Earlier reports of a potential flaw in Windows 2000 have been debunked. The flaw, which was reported on the Internet last month, concerned servers used as domain controllers and connected to more than 51 IP addresses.

A group of users at a North Carolina ISP reported problems with their domain controller after adding 52 IP addresses to the machine. They reported the problem to Microsoft Corp. (www.microsoft.com), who, after five days of testing, declared the problem to be an "issue," rather than a flaw.

Russ Cooper, moderator of NT Bugtraq (www.ntbugtraq.com), feels that the issue may lie more with the users than the operating system. "My own W2K Domain Controller is now configured with 56 IP addresses and appears to be functioning perfectly," he says.

Users cannot expect to add more than 51 IP addresses running the software out of the box. Cooper reports that he had to re-configure the DNS services in order to accommodate his network. He adds that the documentation also pointed to this issue. - Christopher McConnell
