Microsoft Releases Service Pack for SMS 2.0

Microsoft Corp. has released the first service pack for Systems Management Server 2.0, the company’s tool for centralized management of Windows-based desktop and server systems.

At Microsoft’s Systems Management Server product Web site, the company says the service pack was released to ensure compatibility with Windows 2000 Beta 3 and address customer suggestions. The fix-list contains 112 bugs.

The service pack may be downloaded from the Web or ordered on a CD with a delivery time of 4 to 6 weeks. The Internet download of the Intel version is 106 MB and requires users to burn a new CD, combining the download with an image of the SMS 2.0 CD. To install the service pack, customers must have Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or Service Pack 5 loaded.

SMS 2.0 came out in February. The version added system planning, deployment, diagnostic and Year 2000 tools not featured in the previous version, SMS 1.2. -- Scott Bekker
