Standard Edition on Tap for Content Management Server

Microsoft plans to offer a scaled-down version of Content Management Server 2002 later this year for medium-sized businesses.
Content Management Server provides a platform for Web publishing that brings scalability, permissions, workflows and consistency to complex sites. Microsoft originally purchased the technology a few years ago, and rolled out Content Management Server 2002 as a second generation product last year. The new version will be called the Standard Edition, while the old version will be called the Enterprise Edition.
"CMS [Standard Edition] is designed for medium businesses who benefit from the same content management solutions that large enterprise customers enjoy but without the large-scale requirements Content Management Server Enterprise Edition provides," a Microsoft spokeswoman said.
By splitting Content Management Server into a Standard Edition and an Enterprise Edition, Microsoft is following the path it has taken with Commerce Server and BizTalk Server. Eventually the three servers are to be rolled into one combined product code-named "Jupiter."
Support within the CMS Standard Edition will be limited to a one CPU, one server, one site and no more than 15 users with content author permissions. Pricing for the Standard Edition hasn't been announced.
