Microsoft Releases CTP of SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2

Microsoft recently rolled out a community technology preview (CTP) of the forthcoming Service Pack 2 (SP2) for SQL Server 2008 R2.

The CTP can be downloaded here and is designed for testing purposes only, not for production environments. Microsoft did not elaborate on when it will release the final version of SP2.

SP2 fixes about 25 flaws in Microsoft's relational database management system. The flaws are described in this Knowledge Base article.

The fixes are based on requests from users, according to Microsoft's announcement. The CTP also includes hotfixes from Microsoft earlier release, namely cumulative updates 1 through 5 for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1.

Microsoft listed three highlights to be found in the CTP. It's designed to fix an issue where charts in Windows 7 reports get inexplicably cropped. Another fix addresses a problem with "hidden rows," which causes rows or cells to get collapsed in reports. Finally, Microsoft added fix for a caching problem associated with "batch files containing the alter table command," according to the company's announcement.
