IBM Delivers DB2

IBM Corp. announced the general availability of DB2 Universal Database v 7.0. The company also announced that PeopleSoft plans to standardize its development platform on DB2.

The newest version of the Web-ready relational database management system (RDBMS) will have a Net search extender that enables high-speed searches and is integrated with the database. DB2 will also come with an XML extender. Customers will be able to use this to put whole XML documents into DB2 and build XML documents from SQL query results.

Besides being able to use SQL query results, IBM's (www.ibm.com) new DB2 will be Windows 2000 certified, and be able to exploit some of its capabilities. In addition, the database now has a language for writing stored procedures. DB2 will also be shipping with an IBM OLAP server and starter kit.

A conversion tool for users who wish to migrate from Oracle, Microsoft, or Sybase can be downloaded from the IBM Web site.

The recent release also comes with a new pricing structure for application service providers (ASPs). Under the new policy, ASPs will pay IBM on a per customer, per transaction basis.

Regular pricing for the DB2 v 7 is $17,500 for the enterprise edition and $22,500 for the extended enterprise edition. The developer's edition will be offered at $499 -- which is half price -- until December 13. -- Alicia Costanza
