Dantz Development Corp. released a free upgrade to its Retrospect Backup software for Windows 95, 98, NT, and 2000.
Retrospect Backup 5.1 includes several new features. It builds on version 5.0's Windows 2000 support by adding optimized backup and restore of COM+ and Certificate Server databases, as well as full backup and restore of encrypted files and directories. Retrospect Workgroup Backup and Retrospect Server Backup provide full protection for Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server by providing Active Directory support.
Retrospect 5.1 can now shut down and restart databases, send an e-mail when media is required, and notify the administrator if unauthorized access is attempted. External scripts can be executed at key points in the backup process such as at the beginning and end of various backup operations, allowing unattended backup of otherwise constantly running systems. Several sample scripts are included to automate common operations such as backing up Outlook mail clients and Exchange Servers.
Retrospect 5.1 also offers improved open file backup capabilities, at both the client and server levels. The new ReportsWatcher feature compiles data from one or more Retrospect servers and makes it available in HTML form. ReportsWatcher allows administrators to view a comprehensive console report of backup activity for an entire organization. Retrospect 5.1 also adds support for addtional devices, such as the ADR link of drives from OnStream and several new CD-RW drives.
