CA to Acquire Platinum

In a deal estimated to value $3.5 billion, Computer Associates International Inc. (CA, www.ca.com) will acquire Platinum Technology International Inc. (www.platinum.com).

With the acquisition, CA will attain Platinum's knowledge management, data warehouse, database tools and application lifecycle management. CA will integrate these into its Jasmine object-oriented database tool.

Platinum provides software products and consulting services to large companies to manage and improve their IT infrastructures, including systems and database management, e-commerce, application infrastructure management, data warehousing, knowledge management, decision support and Y2K reengineering. The 12-yeal-old company has more than 120 offices across 6 continents.

Platinum's consulting and implementation services will also complement CA's Global Professional Services (GPS), formed last April to provide more turnkey solutions. Platinum will extend this service in Europe where it has a large presence. -- Brian Ploskina, Assistant Editor
