Ballmer Named President of Microsoft

Bill Gates has formally recognized right-hand man Steve Ballmer by naming him president of Microsoft Corp. Formerly, Ballmer held the title of executive vice president of sales and support, but he has long been considered second only to Gates in Microsoft's power structure.

Gates says the change will enable him to spend more time concentrating on Microsoft's long-term vision and strategy. He also said Ballmer's promotion will enable Microsoft to take advantage of new growth opportunities.

The change engendered several other shifts in Microsoft's executive committee. Most notably, executive vice president and chief operating officer Bob Herbold, group vice president of platforms and applications Paul Maritz, senior vice president of law and corporate affairs William Neukom and group vice president of interactive media Frank Higgins will now report to Ballmer. Chief technology officer Nathan Myhrvold will continue reporting to Gates, however.
