Reed to Retire from Microsoft Board

William G. Reed Jr. will retire from the Microsoft board of directors after 17 years. The board has decided not to replace Reed, reducing the size of the Microsoft board from 10 members to nine.

"Reed's decision was prompted by his desire to begin limiting his business commitments and spending more time on personal matters," Microsoft said in a statement.

The former chairman of Simpson Investment Company, a Pacific Northwest lumber company, Reed joined the board in October 1987, about a year after Microsoft went public.

Charles H. Noski, corporate vice president and chief financial officer of Northrop Grumman and former vice chairman of AT&T, will replace Reed as Audit Committee chairman. Another board member, Ann McLaughlin Korologos, will join the Audit Committee.
