Microsoft Starts Countdown to Dynamics GP End-of-Support

Dynamics GP, Microsoft's venerable enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution for midsized businesses, is set to lose support in four years.

Microsoft warned last week that starting Sept. 30, 2029, it will stop offering technical support, product enhancements and regulatory updates for Dynamics GP. Security patches will cease on April 30, 2031.

Microsoft acquired the technology for Dynamics GP at the turn of the millennium, when it purchased Great Plains Software for $1.1 billion.

To replace Dynamics GP, Microsoft is advising organizations to adopt Dynamics 365 Business Central, its cloud-based ERP solution for SMBs. Dynamics 365 Business Central has been updated with "advanced" capabilities, Microsoft argues, making it a strong replacement for Dynamics GP defectors.

"Dynamics 365 Business Central integrates cutting-edge Al tools that transform how businesses operate," said Microsoft in its blog. "From automating routine tasks to providing predictive insights, Al empowers you to make smarter decisions faster. Additionally, our commitment to security ensures your data is protected using encryption and other industry security best practices, giving you peace of mind and allowing you to focus on your core business. This integration enables you to leverage the full potential of your technology stack, driving efficiency and increased productivity."

Microsoft directed Dynamics GP users to leverage its partners to help with the transition. A list of qualified partners is available here (log-in required). Microsoft also provides links to additional resources here.
