Linux 2.4 Finally Available

The wait for the release of the Linux 2.4 kernel is finally over.

Just five days after Linux creator Linus Torvalds posted a note on the Internet saying that 2.4 was not ready yet, he switched gears on Thursday when he wrote an email to the Kernel Mailing List saying that the kernel was now available for download.

When he posted the note about the delay on New Years Eve, Torvalds alluded to some minor problems that had to be fixed and urged programmers to test out the pre-release version of the product.

Torvalds had a change of heart, however, saying, “things don't get better from having the same people test it over and over again. In short, 2.4.0 is out there.”

Linux users have been waiting eagerly for the 2.4 release, mainly because of the increased multiprocessor scalability. The 2.4 kernel supports 8-processor SMP systems, a feature that should enable to compete with Microsoft in all but the highest-end configurations.
