AMD Ships 1.1-GHz Processor

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Inc. released its new 1.1 GHz Athlon processor in a new performance PC line. The company also released Athlons in 600 and 700-MHz speeds in a value line of PCs.

The 1.1-GHz Athlon is the next step up in speed from the Thunderbird specification released earlier this year by AMD (www.amd.com). Many major OEMs, including Compaq Computer Corp., Hewelett-Packard Co., and IBM Corp. will offer the new processor in their upcoming PCs.

The release of the new Athlon comes just weeks after the release of Intel Corp.'s 1.13-GHz Pentium III processor. - Isaac Slepner
