AMD Inc. today matched Intel's top-speed Pentium processor with the
introduction of its own 800-MHz AMD Athlon processor. The 800-MHz Athlon is
AMD's (
www.amd.com) fastest processor yet.
The AMD Athlon is an x86-compatible, seventh-generation design featuring 128
KB of on-chip level (L1) cache and a backside L2 cache interface; 3DNow!
technology; and the AMD Athlon system bus.
OEMs including Compaq Computer Corp. and IBM Corp. have announced plans to
develop systems based on the new processor.
AMD, KryoTech (www.kryotech.com), and
Compaq also joined today to demonstrate a Compaq Presario Internet PC running
an AMD Athlon processor at 1 GHz. The demonstration is based on KryoTech's
SuperG technology, which accelerates the processor by cooling it. -- Isaac
