Microsoft Releases Dynamics NAV 2016

The next major version of Microsoft's Dynamics NAV product, called Dynamics NAV 2016, became generally available on Monday.

Microsoft last updated its Dynamics NAV product, which is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), roughly one year ago with the October 2014 release of Dynamics NAV 2015. Since then, Microsoft has improved Dynamics NAV's integration with Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics CRM Online, as well as added "new capabilities in mobility, business insight, and cloud services," according to a blog post by Wayne Morris, corporate vice president of marketing at Microsoft.

Morris gave a brief overview of the new features in Dynamics NAV 2016, which include native apps for Windows, iOS and Android devices and PCs; pre-included Power BI dashboards; and the ability to run Dynamics NAV on Microsoft's "Database as a Service" product, Azure SQL Database.

For Microsoft partners, Dynamics NAV 2016 features "a brand new code editor, an event-based extensibility system for minimal upgrade disrupts, and an extension packaging and deployment system that makes it easier than ever for partners to create extensions for NAV that can be quickly and easily upgraded," according to this post on the Dynamics NAV team blog.

Microsoft gave partners a preview of Dynamics NAV 2016 back in July during a session at its Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC). At that time, Microsoft said that it plans to update Dynamics NAV once a month, and release a new version of the product once a year.

According to the below slide presented by Microsoft at the WPC session and shared by several attendees, Microsoft plans to release "NAV Next +1" and "NAV Next +2" in 2016 and 2017, respectively, although the company did not give any concrete details about either of these releases.
