Microsoft: Windows 8 Hitting General Availability Oct. 26

The official release date for Windows 8 will be Oct. 26, 2012, according to a Windows Team blog post on Wednesday.

At last week's Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft said Windows 8's general availability (GA) date would be in October.

According to the blog post, Steven Sinofsky, Microsoft's president of the Windows and Windows Live Division, made the announcement Wednesday at a Microsoft sales conference. "Customers will be able to get Windows 8 -- whether in upgrade fashion or on a new PC -- starting on October 26," it said.

Microsoft previously said that most upgrades to Windows 8 will cost $40, with upgrades from new Windows 7 machines costing as $15.
