Terracotta Adds to IBM WebSphere Support

Terracotta has bolstered its clustering infrastructure software for Java applications. The company issued an announcement that its Terracotta 2.4 solution, released in May of this year, now supports IBM's WebSphere Application Server Community Edition (CE), which is an open source enterprise server solution.

Terracotta's open source solution, licensed under a modified version of the Mozilla Public License version 1.1, helps support scalability and availability via Java application servers and architectures. Programs can run concurrently across multiple Java Virtual Machines using the solution.

In addition to supporting IBM's WebSphere Application Server CE, Terracotta's solution currently works with "JBoss Application Server, BEA WebLogic, Glassfish Application Server, Jetty and Spring," according to an announcement issued by Terracotta.

The solution consists of library and server software. It can be used to overcome difficulties associated with running Java code on more than one Java Virtual Machine. Terracotta's announcement explains that the solution reduces "the load on application servers and databases."

The solution also includes support for Hibernate, a query service that support persistence for relational database and Java object-oriented elements. Persistence is the ability to retain data structures between program executions.

Hibernate is a Professional Open Source project that supports the JBoss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS), a suite of products maintained by JBoss Inc., a division of Linux solutions distributor Red Hat.

Terracotta added additional support for Hibernate with a new EHcache configuration module that "offers high-performance clustering for Hibernate 2nd Level Cache," according to the company's announcement.

"Terracotta has supercharged its ability to deliver scalability and high availability to users who are adopting an ever-expanding variety of frameworks. Support for WebSphere and Hibernate are excellent examples of this accelerated development," stated Ari Zilka, CTO and co-founder of Terracotta, in the announcement.
