Dell, HP to Ship 64-bit Windows Support

SEATTLE -- Dell and HP took advantage of this week’s delivery of Microsoft’s Windows x64 editions to announce that they will soon begin shipping computers that run the 64-bit operating systems.

Dell announced it has started taking orders for its Intel Xeon-based Precision 470 and 670 workstations with Windows XP Professional x64 Edition pre-installed. Shipments are set to start on June 1. Also beginning in June, The Round Rock, Texas company will begin shipping its PowerEdge servers with Windows Server 2003 x64 editions installed, says Darrel Ward, Dell’s Precision workstations marketing manager.

Meanwhile, HP announced it will begin shipping 64-bit models of its HP dx5150 Series business PC within a month preinstalled with Windows XP x64 Professional Edition, says Jonathan Ha, product manager for business PCs in HP’s Personal Systems Group.

The systems are based on AMD’s Athlon 64 processors. In addition, HP said it will support Microsoft’s 64-bit OSes throughout its entire lineup of workstations and ProLiant Servers.
