AMD Makes Progress on Dual-Core Chips

AMD Corp. completed design of its AMD64 dual-core processor and plans to deliver the chips to the x86 server market in the middle of next year, the company said this week.

In addition, dual-core processors for high-end client PCs will follow in the second half of 2005, AMD officials say.

"We anticipated an industry shift toward multi-tasking applications requiring scalability that only 64-bit dual-core processors can provide," Dirk Meyer, an executive vice president at AMD, said in a statement.

AMD's design completion milestone for the dual-core chip comes a month after Intel president and chief operating officer Paul Otellini showed analysts in New York a sample of what he said were Intel's dual-core "Montecito"chip. That version of Itanium, with 24 MB of L3 cache, is slated for release in 2005.
