CA, Gadzoox Partner on Serverless SANs

Gadzoox Networks Inc. has partnered with Computer Associates (CA) International Inc. to develop serverless backup capabilities and unified SAN and enterprise management under CA's Storage Area Network Integrated Technology Initiative (SANITI).

CA (www.ca.com) and Gadzoox (www.gadzoox.com) plan to introduce a switch-based serverless backup solution for Windows and Novell NetWare as well as an integrated solution for managing SANs under the Unicenter TNG enterprise framework. These solutions will be demonstrated at the CA-World 2000 conference that is taking place this week in New Orleans.

SANs provide a "many-to-many" network connectivity model and enable methods of streamlining the backup process that have not been possible with SCSI bus technology. The same intelligent agents that can provide "LAN-free" backup capabilities can also enable a serverless backup on a SAN. With serverless backup, agents embedded in SAN devices such as switches or routers can direct the flow of backup traffic from disk to tape and eliminate the need for data to flow through a server. Using this functionality, up to 30 percent of a server's processing capability can be applied to other tasks.

Gadzoox and CA have partnered on the implementation of the open standard API, known as the SNIA extended copy command, in Gadzoox' Ventana SANtools for the Capellix 3000 modular SAN switch and CA's Image Option for ARCserveIT. Rather than create a new framework with which to manage SANs, the two companies will integrate Unicenter TNG with Ventana SANtools Snap-in for Unicenter TNG to enable the management of SANs from a familiar framework. - Isaac Slepner
