Cabletron Announces ATM Integration Switch

Cabletron Systems unveiled the SmartSwitch 1500, an integrated access device (IAD) that provides ATM connectivity and the integration of voice, video, and data in a single platform. The SmartSwitch 1500 is designed to deliver the performance and integration benefits of ATM over a WAN to service providers and small office locations that require higher bandwidth and advanced services. The SmartSwitch 1500 utilizes inverse multiplexing over ATM (IMA) to support speeds greater than DS-1/E1, without the costs associated with DS-3 broadband access.

Additionally, the SmartSwitch 1500 supports structured and unstructured circuit emulation services (CES) and bandwidth provisioning, allowing service providers to deliver quality-of-service levels for voice, video, and data applications.

For the enterprise market, the SmartSwitch 1500 extends ATM networks to sites that do not support native ATM interfaces, enabling multi-service capabilities at branch office locations.

The SmartSwitch 1500 Compact and Modular will be available later this month.
