Microsoft Posts Winsock Hotfix for SP6

Microsoft Corp. has posted a patch for the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 error that the company announced late last week.

After users applied SP6, Winsock calls would fail unless the user had local administrator rights, according to Microsoft. The problem usually occurs when a user's program attempts to connect to the server. The application errors saying "Could not connect to server" or "Access denied."

Initially, a Microsoft spokesman warned the problem was mostly for users of Lotus Notes on NT 4.0 who would not have access to Notes unless they were logged on as the administrator. The company recommended at that time that Lotus users not download SP6. The notice on the Microsoft Web site, however, makes no mention of Lotus Notes.

SP 6 is a cumulative roll up of fixes and updates to customer issues but is not a required update, nor is it required for Y2K compliance so the upgrade wasn't worth the problems that may have arisen if SP6 was applied.
