CommVault Systems to Embed Legato SmartMedia Within its Storage Management Solutions

Legato Systems Inc. (www.legato.com) today announced a strategic OEM license agreement with CommVault Systems (www.commvault.com). CommVault will be integrating Legato SmartMedia into its family of storage management products and storage area network offerings.

"The integration of Legato Smart Media ensures our enterprise storage management product will support a broad range of devices through standard interfaces," says Larry Cormier, vice president of marketing and business development for CommVault. "The ability to transparently share drives and libraries across different applications and systems is vital to controlling storage costs in the open systems arena."

Legato SmartMedia will enable drive and library sharing across multiple instances of a storage management application, such as CommVault's storage management software and Legato NetWorker. Legato SmartMedia will act as a gateway within or across multiple storage devices, controlling application requests for media from a central location, providing centralized monitoring and tracking of removable media.

CommVault selected Legato SmartMedia because it provides extended media management capabilities for distributed open systems environments through standard interfaces. As part of the OEM agreement, CommVault intends to modify its storage management software to work with Legato SmartMedia, and will integrate and support the Legato SmartMedia product line.

Legato SmartMedia is based on OpenVault technology licensed from Silicon Graphics, and is compliant with the OpenVault APIs, the basis for the emerging IEEE Storage Systems standard. Legato SmartMedia conforms to the emerging IEEE standard for interaction with removable media devices, allowing faster and easier integration of new tape drives and library technology into Legato SmartMedia environments. Devices certified to work with Legato SmartMedia will work with both CommVault Systems' storage management products and with Legato NetWorker. -- Brian Ploskina, Assistant Editor
