Sequent Announces Plans for Merced

Sequent Computer Systems Inc. (Beaverton, Ore., www.sequent.com) has unveiled its plans for building systems around Intel Corp.’s IA-64 architecture, beginning with Merced.

Sequent promises to offer IA-64-based systems for both the midrange and high-end server markets. The Merced-based midrange systems will be scalable from 4 processors to 16 processors, and the boxes will run with either Unix or Windows NT.

The first generation of IA-64-based machines will be Sequent’s NUMACenter, and the servers will offer configurations of 16 processors and greater, in a single system running any combination of Unix and Windows NT in a managed environment. These systems promise to deliver capabilities for mixed workload and resource management.
