Microsoft Sets September Launch for Purview Data Governance

Microsoft's AI-powered Purview solution to address governance and security challenges is set to become generally available on Sept. 1.

Purview Data Governance is a brand-new "Purview experience," as Microsoft describes it. It provides a single platform to help organizations unify their governance, policy, compliance, risk and security efforts. Users can manage and govern all of their data, both structured and unstructured, across their data estate. This includes data from Azure, Microsoft 365, on-premises systems, multicloud environments and future SaaS applications.

Microsoft said the main focus of Purview Data Governance is to mitigate the growing amount of "fragmented point solutions" many organizations have deployed as part of their data management strategy. It aims to centralize labeling, audit logging, data classification, lineage and management over multiple platforms, including Microsoft Fabric.

"This experience is designed to help today's data leaders solve their key governance and security challenges in an AI-powered, business-friendly, and unified solution," said Rohan Kumar, corporate vice president for Microsoft Security Platform, Microsoft Purview and Microsoft Priva, in a blog post Tuesday announcing the upcoming release. "Since the service launch in early April 2024, usage has skyrocketed by more than 400%, with more than 1,500 commercial entities actively participating in data governance activities."

In line with Microsoft's current modus operandi, AI is at the heart of Purview Data Governance. AI is integrated at every point to automate manual tasks, accelerate data curation and enhance data discovery. Data stewards can generate data quality rules automatically, and data consumers can find data products using natural language.

Microsoft has also announced that its Purview Data Governance solution will be receiving some new features when it hits general availability in September. First, a preview of Copilot embedded experience in Microsoft Purview will make its way into the platform. The feature will help assist data management in creating enterprise catalogs and enhance overall data search capabilities.

As for integration with its own data platform, custom report building from Fabric data and the ability to scan any Fabric-supported data in Purview will also be arriving with general availability. Finally, Microsoft will be expanding its partner network to include support for Studio and RELTIO, which Microsoft said will enhance data modeling and management capabilities.

Those looking to test drive Microsoft Purview Data Governance before its official release can still access the preview through the Microsoft Purview portal.
