Dell U.S., Compaq Worldwide PC Market Leaders

Dell retained the top spot in the United States PC market and Compaq retained front-runner status in the worldwide market in 1999, according to a year-end report from International Data Corp. (IDC).

Despite some fourth-quarter obstacles brought on by pricing and component shortages, Dell (www.dell.com) held on to the number one position in the U.S. PC market for both the fourth quarter and the year 1999. Dell sold 2.1 million units in the quarter and turned in a 53 percent improvement in growth over its 1998 numbers.

On the worldwide market scene, Compaq (www.compaq.com) retained its first place position with a 14 percent market share and growth of 19 percent over 1998. The company sold more than 15.7 million units worldwide in 1999.

IDC (www.idc.com) also reported that the 1999 worldwide PC market closed over the previous year's market by 23.3 percent and shipped 112.7 million units for the total year, and the U.S. market grew by 25 percent. -- Isaac Slepner
