IBM Introduces Linear Tape-Open Technology Drives

Following a wave of recent storage industry breakthroughs, IBM today announced the release of tape drives based on a new open tape storage architecture, Linear Tape-Open (LTO) technology. LTO technology has provided a foundation for a new generation of tape storage products with vast capacity and performance benchmarks. LTO may permit tape storage drives and media from multiple manufacturers to interoperate.

The IBM StorageSmart Ultrium Tape Drive, for OEM and automation companies, contains 100-gigabyte capacity on a single tape cartridge - up to double the capacity of current offerings. It delivers data at up to twice the speed of current data transfer rates.

LTO technology-based drives come on the heels of other recent breakthroughs in the storage market by IBM. Two weeks ago, IBM introduced the 73 GB Ultrastar 72ZX, the world's highest-capacity hard drive. Two weeks earlier, IBM established a new computer data storage world record on a magnetic hard disk.
