Magnum Magnifies Network Management

Event monitoring tools can tell you when things are failing, but sometimes run into trouble when it comes to what devices are failing and why. A company with experience in the HP-UX world has brought event correlation and root cause analysis to NT infrastructures.

Magnum Technologies Inc. (https://www.quest.com/) today announced its Coordinator product designed to integrate with frameworks like Hewlett Packard Co.'s (HP, www.hp.com) OpenView and Tivoli Systems Inc.'s (www.tivoli.com) NetView, to add root cause analysis functionality to monitoring systems.

According to Magnum, when a framework reports a failing system, Coordinator steps in to determine what systems are causing the trouble and why. A spokesman says that frameworks cannot see beyond a network infrastructure device. "Only the first port has an IP, so it can’t even determine the port," said a Magnum spokesman.

When the failure is detected, Coordinator begins a series of testing scripts, running pings and traceroutes to drill down to the exact device and determine the cause of failure. In addition, Coordinator can detect if performance issues are due to poor network topology or devices that are functioning marginally.

Coordinator integrates with HelpDesk ticketing systems to automatically create trouble tickets when problems are detected, prioritizing problems as well as detecting them.

Magnum also announced a marketing agreement with HP’s Network and Service Provider services division to remarket Magnum’s Cap-Trend as a component of their consulting services. Cap-Trend is a network and systems management and assessment tool. - Christopher McConnell
