Intel Infiniband Coming in 2001

With the release of the 1.0 specification imminent, Intel Corp. officials announced that actual server products using the revolutionary Infiniband I/O architecture are expected to be available to the end user by the third quarter of 2001.

"The specification itself is nearing completion [by early fall of 2000]; we know what Infiniband is," said Jim Pappas, director of initiative marketing for the Intel ( enterprise platform group. "We'll begin doing a lot of training [beginning at the Intel Developer Forum Conference from Aug. 22-24 in San Jose CA]."

Because so many of the industry's leading companies are participating in the development of the Infiniband technology - there were 165 members of the Infiniband Trade Association at last count - Pappas sees a relatively smooth transition from the shared bus system, which all agree can't accommodate today's increasing data demands. "I believe we're seeing a strong representation from enough companies to facilitate a pretty rapid adoption rate," Pappas said.

On Wednesday, Dr. Tom Bradicich, co-chairman of the Infiniband Trade Association ( and director of Netfinity architecture and technology for IBM Corp. (, announced the release of the Infiniband 1.0 specification for late September or early October. - Ted Williams
