Intel Infiniband Coming in 2001

With the release of the 1.0 specification imminent, Intel Corp. officials announced that actual server products using the revolutionary Infiniband I/O architecture are expected to be available to the end user by the third quarter of 2001.
"The specification itself is nearing completion [by early fall of 2000]; we know what Infiniband is," said Jim Pappas, director of initiative marketing for the Intel (www.intel.com) enterprise platform group. "We'll begin doing a lot of training [beginning at the Intel Developer Forum Conference from Aug. 22-24 in San Jose CA]."
Because so many of the industry's leading companies are participating in the development of the Infiniband technology - there were 165 members of the Infiniband Trade Association at last count - Pappas sees a relatively smooth transition from the shared bus system, which all agree can't accommodate today's increasing data demands. "I believe we're seeing a strong representation from enough companies to facilitate a pretty rapid adoption rate," Pappas said.
On Wednesday, Dr. Tom Bradicich, co-chairman of the Infiniband Trade Association (www.infinibandta.org) and director of Netfinity architecture and technology for IBM Corp. (www.ibm.com), announced the release of the Infiniband 1.0 specification for late September or early October. - Ted Williams
