IBM Introduces DB2 Version 7

IBM Corp. announced the release of version 7 of its DB2 Universal Database. In conjunction with the product announcement, the company has also released plans to hire 500 more data management software engineers and sales specialists.

IBM (www.ibm.com) says that DB2 Universal Database version 7 will make it easier for companies to conduct business on the Web, gain more knowledge about their customers, lessen deployment time, and perform faster online searches.

The company is also offering a new pricing scheme for application service providers (ASPs). Under this plan, IBM will receive a percentage of an ASP's revenue, based on a per subscriber or per transaction model, once the IBM solution is implemented. In turn, the ASP will be able to purchase the DB2 database for a much smaller fee.

In its latest database, IBM has integrated functions to make it easier for customers to migrate from Oracle Corp., Microsoft Corp., Sybase, and Informix databases. The beta release of DB2 version 7 can be downloaded at http://www.ibm.com/software/data/db2/udb/v7/beta. -Alicia Costanza
