Corel to Buy Inprise/Borland

Corel Corp. announced today that it would purchase Inprise/Borland Corp., a provider of software development tools, in a $2.44 billion stock deal.

Corel (www.corel.com), which has been aggressively developing a Linux product base, is primarily known for end user software such as WordPerfect and Corel Paint. While software development tools are new to Corel, the Borland product line will certainly complement Corel’s Linux emphasis.

In addition to Inprise/Borland’s renowned development tools, such as Borland C++, the company also offers back end solutions for Linux such as application servers and middleware.

The acquisition of Inprise/Borland (www.inprise.com) extends Corel’s reach into the Linux market. Corel is leading a charge to establish Linux as a full-featured operating system for enterprises, instead of a hobbyist platform.

The addition of the Insight/Borland product line creates a full set of Linux tools for Corel. "This merger enables us to offer end-to-end product solutions and global support to all of our shared customers," said Corel president Michael Cowpland in a statement

Cowpland will remain president and CEO of the new company, Corel, and Dale Fuller, interim president and CEO of Insight/Borland, will take on the new role of chairman of Corel board of directors. -- Christopher McConnell
