Novell Launches Directory-Based E-Mail Solution

Novell Inc. combined spam protection, Web-based mail, and user self-administration into the latest upgrade of its Novell Internet Messaging System (NIMS). The standards-based upgrade of the e-mail system leverages Novell's NDS e-Directory.

With unsolicited bulk e-mail (UBE) protection, users of version 2.1 can block spam from their inboxes. A new mail proxy lets users retrieve e-mail from other standards-based accounts such as Novell GroupWise, Eudora World Mail Server 2.0, and Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service. Supported standards include Post Office Protocol 3 (POP), Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP), Lightweight Direct Access Protocol (LDAP), and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

NIMS users are able to select the client of their choice as well as a standard Web browser to read their mail. NIMS puts many administrative tasks into the hands of users, but still maintains central management through NDS e-Directory. This flexibility reduces workloads on system administrators, lowers administration costs, and lets users implement personal preferences for sending and receiving e-mail, according to Novell.

Novell Internet Messaging System 2.1 is currently available.
