Microsoft, Oracle Announce Updates to Joint Database IaaS Service

The Oracle Database@Azure infrastructure-as-a-service offering from Oracle and Microsoft is getting new capabilities, including integrations with key Microsoft data and security services.
The two companies described the updates on Monday, during the first day of the Oracle CloudWorld event in Las Vegas, Nev., roughly a year after the service first debuted. The new capabilities are meant to help organizations "unlock more value from data and pave the way to Al innovation," they said in an announcement.
Oracle Database@Azure effectively lets organizations run Oracle database services on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) on top of Microsoft's Azure datacenter hardware and solutions. The partnership also gives Azure customers access to the Oracle Exadata Database Service, the Oracle Autonomous Database and Oracle Real Application Clusters, which use OCI technology.
Integration with Microsoft Fabric
Included in Monday's announcements was the public preview release of integration between Fabric, Microsoft's expansive data intelligence platform, and OCI GoldenGate, Oracle's database replication and heterogeneous data integration service.
"The combination of OCI GoldenGate's continuous, low-latency data availability in Microsoft Fabric's comprehensive data and analytics tools, like Power Bl and Copilot, enables customers to connect their essential data sources -- both Oracle and non-Oracle -- to drive better insights and decision-making," the companies said in the release.
More information on the public preview of the Fabric integration is available in this Microsoft blog post. No general availability date was provided.
Integration with Microsoft Sentinel
Also announced as a public preview on Monday was new integration between Oracle Database@Azure and the Microsoft Sentinel security information and event management (SIEM) service.
The cloud-based Sentinel product is designed to detect and mitigate security threats at scale using AI. Its integration with Oracle Database@Azure will let organizations "extend their threat analytics to their Oracle Exadata Database Service and infrastructure powering Oracle Database@Azure and the Oracle Database services that operate them," according to the announcement.
Other Enhancements
Oracle and Microsoft highlighted two general availability releases -- Oracle Zero Data Loss Autonomous Recovery Service, a data protection solution for Oracle Database@Azure users running Oracle Exadata Database, and support for Oracle Autonomous Database on Oracle Database@Azure.
In addition, companies announced plans to expand the availability of Oracle Database@Azure from six multizone regions currently to 21 by the end of 2024. They will also launch 11 disaster recovery-only zones.
