Lync Security Patch the Latest To Be Pulled by Microsoft

Microsoft on Tuesday quietly pulled a Lync security update that was released just last week as part of its September "Patch Tuesday" rollout.
Security update 2982385 is part of Bulletin MS14-055, an "important" update for Lync. According to Microsoft's updated bulletin, users were experiencing issues when applying the fix for Lync Server 2010.
"Microsoft revised this bulletin to address a known issue that prevented users from successfully installing security update 2982385 for Microsoft Lync Server 2010," Microsoft said. "Microsoft is investigating behavior associated with the installation of this update, and will update this bulletin when more information becomes available. As an added precaution, Microsoft has removed the download links to the 2982385 security update."
This marks the third month in a row that Microsoft has had problems with its security update release. In July, patches caused compatibility issues with InstallShield and Dell Data Protection-Encryption software. In August, Microsoft pulled a security bulletin that caused users' systems to crash.
Microsoft's patch woes have also extended to its non-security items. Last week, Microsoft pulled a non-security update for OneDrive due to a file sync problem.
The recent string of flawed updates seems to have prompted many in IT to rethink their approach to Microsoft's monthly security update. Responding to an article about the August patch issues, reader Adam Akers said that rushing to install the updates as soon as they are released may not be the best approach.
"Probably a good idea to wait a week before deploying any MS patches because of occasional issues like this," Akers wrote. "Let the dust settle before putting your systems at risk."
