Microsoft Releases SkyDrive Pro as Standalone Product

Microsoft this week released a standalone sync client of SkyDrive Pro, its cloud-based storage and collaboration service for organizations.

SkyDrive Pro has synchronization capabilities that lets SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint Online users connect their local machines to team site libraries in SharePoint 2013 or Office 365.

This standalone version of the SkyDrive Pro client enables that synchronization for users who don't have Office 2013. Previously, it was a requirement to have Office 2013 installed on a local machine to get the sync benefits.

Users can get offline access to files by syncing a SharePoint library to their local machine. Any changes made at the local machine will sync back up when the user is online. The synchronization of SharePoint libraries starts when the user clicks a sync button in a particular library.

There are some limits to this syncing, according to Microsoft's description. No more than 5,000 items in a SharePoint library can be synced, and there's a limit of 20,000 items in a user's SkyDrive Pro library. File downloads are limited to 2 GB.

The new sync client can be downloaded here. However, users of Office Professional Plus, Office 365 Small Business Premium and Office 365 Pro Plus already have the SkyDrive Pro sync client and don't need to install it, according to Microsoft's announcement on Tuesday.
