Forefront Unified Access Gateway 2010 SP3 Coming in Q1

Microsoft will release Service Pack 3 for its Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG) 2010 product in early 2013, the company said on Thursday.

Microsoft's announcement did not pinpoint an exact availability date, but it did reveal that SP3 will enable Microsoft's UAG reverse-proxy and access control solution to work with Windows 8 clients and various 2013-branded Microsoft server products.

For instance, SP3 will enable IT shops to publish Exchange 2013 using a template in UAG, which is currently problematic to do. The new service pack also will provide a template for publishing SharePoint 2013.

SP3 will allow UAG to support Windows 8 clients running Internet Explorer 10. That support includes enabling connections via DirectAccess, which is Microsoft's virtual private network-like technology in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012. In addition, SP3 will enable Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 8.0 connections for remote clients.

Microsoft has already enabled RDP 8.0 connections using Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 SP1 clients via an update (Knowledge Base article 2592687). However, UAG just doesn't work with this update right now, according to a Microsoft blog, which was posted this month. Possibly, the coming service pack will fix the problem.

Other UAG improvements to come with SP3 include the ability to use Office 2013 to connect to SharePoint 2013, as well as the ability to use Outlook 2013.
