GoDaddy Agrees To Run Domains in Limbo

GoDaddy.com, the leading registration company for Internet domain names, has agreed to take over and manage more than 850,000 addresses belonging to customers of a troubled rival, officials announced Tuesday.

RegisterFly customers had been in limbo following financial and operational troubles at the company. Officials say many customers had been unable to renew domain names before they expired or to transfer them to another company.

The takeover, reached with the support of the Internet's key oversight agency, calls for RegisterFly to give GoDaddy its customer databases and for GoDaddy to start running those names within a week. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the organization in charge of the Internet's addressing policies, had decertified RegisterFly and even sued the company for its databases. It wasn't clear what effect the GoDaddy agreement would have on the lawsuit.

GoDaddy Group Inc. manages more than 20 million domain names under ".com," ".net" ".org," ".biz," ".info" and other suffixes.
