Altiris Tool Creates Vista Installations

Altiris announced it is shipping Wise Installation Studio 7.0, an updated tool designed for creating installations for Windows Vista, 64-bit Windows operating systems and Windows Mobile 5 devices.

Wise Installation Studio also aims to help developers reduce software support costs by supporting Altiris' Software Virtualization Solution technology, according to company statements. The technology enables developers to package applications in the virtual software archive (.VSA) format in order to eliminate file and registry conflicts between applications.

Version 7.0 also includes integration with Nalpeiron PRO-Tector Standard, a tool that helps developers create trialware versions of applications. PRO-Tector Standard generates, tracks and enforces software licenses, and provides a range of options to protect software intellectual property through the software trial period and product activation. Nalpeiron is offering Wise Installation Studio 7.0 customers a free copy of Nalpeiron PRO-Tector Standard, according to Altiris.

The new version is available in two versions -- Wise Installation Studio and Wise Installation Express. Wise Installation Studio is a full-featured product that contains advanced installation authoring capabilities, including support for the Windows Installer (.MSI), WiseScript (.EXE) and virtual software archive (.VSA) formats.

Meanwhile, Wise Installation Express provides a basic installation authoring tool intended for software developers who only need support for the Windows Installer (.MSI) format. Both products support Windows Vista and 64-bit Windows operating systems.

Wise Installation Studio 7.0 costs $1,199 per user, while Wise Installation Express costs $449 per user.
