Microsoft Beta Tests Continuous Data Protection Update

Microsoft has begun beta testing its upcoming System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) version 2, the company said Wednesday.
The announcement came at the Storage Decisions conference in New York.
DPM version 2 will extend DPM 2006 to protect and recover Microsoft Exchange Server, SQL Server and SharePoint Portal Server, and will use terminology that administrators are familiar with.
"With DPM version 2, IT administrators help protect and recover all applications or application objects by using application terminology and concepts such as mailboxes for Microsoft Exchange Server or file shares for Windows file servers," says a statement posted on Microsoft's Web site.
Additionally, DPM version 2 will unify the application recovery process and the application backup process into a single integrated continuous data protection solution, the statement continues. Version 2 will also enable IT administrator to quickly recover applications and files from seamlessly integrated disk and tape media.
Microsoft plans to ship the second beta in early spring 2007, and the final code later in the year.
