Clearing the way for the formal Nov. 7 launch, Microsoft on Thursday released to manufacturing SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005.
An RTM marks the final development milestone in a Microsoft product. It means all pre-release development and bug fixing is finished and the code is ready to be pressed onto CDs and DVDs or packaged for download.
In the case of SQL Server, the RTM version is the first completely new version of Microsoft's flagship database in five years.
Visual Studio 2005, which is tightly integrated with SQL Server 2005, was also released to manufacturing on Thursday, a Microsoft spokesperson said. The previous version of Visual Studio shipped in 2003.
While BizTalk Server 2006 will also formally launch at the Nov. 7 event in San Francisco, the product won't actually be ready until sometime in early 2006. The spokesperson promised a Community Technology Preview of BizTalk Server 2006 will be available soon in advance of the business integration server's RTM.
