Exchange Edge Services off 2005 Roadmap

Microsoft has scrapped plans for a 2005 delivery of Exchange Edge Services, a set of technologies for e-mail protection and spam management that builds on Exchange Server 2003, a company spokesperson said Wednesday.

Preliminary plans called for Exchange Edge Services to ship with Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2, which is slated for the second half of 2005. But according to the spokesperson, customers told Microsoft after the initial Edge Services announcement early in 2004 that they needed the product's scope to be broader.

Exchange Edge Services had to "include messaging policy capabilities that organizations need to help meet regulatory compliance requirements. To meet this customer need, Microsoft required additional development time which placed the delivery date of Edge Services close to the release date of the next version of Exchange Server," the spokesperson said in an e-mail to reporters.

Microsoft has not said publicly when the next version of Exchange Server will ship. The company has dropped hints that it could come before Windows "Longhorn" Server, which is currently planned for a 2007 release.

Exchange Server 2003 SP2 is still expected to include the SenderID framework.
