NEC Ships Itanium 2 Blade Server

NEC Solutions began shipping blade servers based on the new Itanium 2 processors released by Intel this week.

The NEC system, called the Express5800/1020Ba Blade server, consists of a 10U chassis holding up to nine server blades with a total of up to 18 processors. Base price is $79,000 for nine two-way blades, with 2 GB of RAM each, 136 GB of hard drive storage and redundant power.

Additional system features include 24 GB of expandable memory, redundant switches for automatic failover and two built-in Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Intel on Monday unveiled six new versions of its 64-bit Itanium 2 processors, including the 1.6 GHz model included in the new NEC blade kit.
