Windows Server 2003 SKU Count at 13

Microsoft keeps delivering or promising new SKUs of Windows Server 2003. After the original six versions the company launched on April 24, Microsoft has delivered or announced an additional seven splits of the server operating system.

Three of them emerged on Wednesday in the form of an announcement of forthcoming 64-bit operating systems, two for AMD's 64-bit architecture and an additional SKU for Intel's Itanium architecture. Those three operating systems entered the beta testing stage Wednesday and are supposed to become generally available in the second half of 2004.

The 13 SKUs and their availability dates:

  • Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (April 24)
  • Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (April 24)
  • Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (April 24)
  • Windows Server 2003, Web Edition (April 24)
  • Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for 64-bit Itanium 2 Systems (April 24)
  • Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition for 64-bit Itanium 2 Systems (April 24)
  • Windows Storage Server 2003, Standard Edition (Sept. 10)
  • Windows Storage Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (Sept. 10)
  • Windows Small Business Server 2003, Standard Edition (Oct. 9)
  • Windows Small Business Server 2003, Premium Edition (Oct. 9)
  • Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition for 64-bit Itanium 2 Systems (in beta)
  • Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition for 64-bit Extended Systems (in beta)
  • Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for 64-bit Extended Systems (in beta)

    By comparison, there were eight SKUs of the Windows 2000 servers, even counting the Server Appliance Kit, Back Office Server 2000 and limited editions of Advanced Server and Datacenter Server.
