Apache Hits Record Web Server Share

The open-source Apache Web server hit a record high in market share in August, running away to 63.72 percent of all domains, according to Netcraft's latest monthly survey.

In raw numbers, more than 27 million domains are now hosted on Apache Web servers, according to Netcraft's survey.

Microsoft's IIS Web server was second with 23.75 percent of the nearly 43 million domain names surveyed by Netcraft. Rounding out the top four were SunOne, with 3.58 percent, and Zeus, with 1.74 percent.

Microsoft lost domains from about 10.9 million in July to about 10.1 million in August. Netcraft attributed much of that 800,000 site loss to Network Solutions' decision to move their domain parking system back to Solaris from a Windows-based infrastructure at Interland.
