Stratus Computer Systems has announced that fault-tolerant four-processor
Stratus ftServer 6500, which supports Windows 2000 Datacenter Server as well as
2000 Server and Advanced Server, will be shipped in February, 2001.
The two-way ftServer 5200 for Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server, which
also possesses the fault-tolerant technology produced by Stratus (www.stratus.com), will ship in December. The
original plan was for the ft5200 to ship in September and the ft6500 in
October.
"We ran into some hardware integration issues we didn't
anticipate," says Stratus spokesman Ken Donoghue of the late delivery.
"Primarily the delay came in marrying our fault-tolerant technology to a
new architecture with industry-standard components."
Both products offer the option of dual or triple modular redundancy,
depending on a user's availability requirements. The ftServer 6500, using Intel's
700 MHz Pentium III Xeon processors, starts at $30,500. The ftServer 5200,
using Intel's 550 MHz Pentium III Xeon processors, starts at $23,300.
Since the release of Windows Datacenter Server was delayed as well, it
appears a February release of Stratus ft6500 will be timely in terms of when
customer interest in Windows 2000 Datacenter Server is expected increase
significantly. - Ted Williams
