Oracle Announces New 8i Release

Oracle Corp. announced the third generation of its Oracle 8i database. Oracle 8i Release 3 is expected to incorporate Java and XML technologies, as well as triple data encryption standard (Triple DES) to provide greater data protection within the database.

The newest version also includes a number of other features. Common Java and XML services between Oracle 8i Release 3 and Oracle Application server 8i Java Servlets; JavaServer Pages (JSP); Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE); and Oracle 8i JVM Accelerator have all been added. In addition, an XML SQL utility has been included to ease the reading and writing of XML documents in their native format.

Triple DES in the database, SSL encryption of HTML connections, and integration with PKI, all add to the security of the new release. Additionally, a PL/SQL gateway allows HTTP calls to be made directly to PL/SQL. Release 3 is slated to be available this summer.
