Veritas Refreshes Backup Tool for Windows Servers

Veritas Software this week unveiled version 9.0 of its Backup Exec for Windows Servers. The software is retooled to support Windows Server 2003, to back up Exchange servers more quickly, for faster setup and with browser-based, remote administration.
Backup Exec is Veritas' product for small to medium-sized businesses needing to back up Windows servers. A separate version of Backup Exec is available for Novell NetWare customers, while Veritas pushes its multi-platform NetBackup product for the largest enterprise customers.
Support for Windows Server 2003 comes about three months ahead of the expected April 24 general availability of Microsoft's next server operating system. Because Windows 2003 hasn't been released to manufacturing, meaning the code is still changing, Veritas may need to offer a patch in the next few months to make Backup Exec version 9.0 compatible with the final version.
According to Veritas, the new version is 88 percent faster in backing up and recovering Exchange environments than the previous 8.6 version. The company also asserts that new installation wizards and automation technologies reduce the installation time of Backup Exec to 10 minutes.
Veritas calls its new Web-based console the "Anywhere Internet." It is designed to allow administrators to monitor and manage backup and recovery jobs from any Internet-connected computer.
Backup Exec version 9.0 starts at $795.
