MOM Gets a Facelift

Microsoft Corp. will unveil the roadmap for the next version of Microsoft Operations Manager in March at the Microsoft Management Summit, the company said this week. In the meantime, the company is refreshing its aging management solution with a raft of incremental pieces.

On Monday, Microsoft released Service Pack 1, a MOM Resource Kit, a second software development kit and updated the MOM Management Packs.

In addition to bug fixes, the service pack globalizes the product, improves performance and scalability to support twice as many servers and brings support for clustering the MOM database.

The second software development kit for MOM provides integration of user-interface views, custom reporting solutions and enhances MOM's ability to monitor non-Windows servers, among other features.

The MOM Resource Kit consists of administrative tools such as a Server Status Monitor and a debugging tool for testing scripts prior to deployment.

Microsoft made about 30 updates to its Management Pack for monitoring Windows-based environments. New packs can monitor applications created for the Microsoft .NET Framework, Network Load Balancing and Cluster Services.

NetIQ Corp., which sold the original MOM technology to Microsoft, joined Microsoft's announcement by rolling out upgrades to its Extended Management Pack products that take MOM beyond Windows 2000. NetIQ is releasing a 1.1 version of its 23 XMPs that extend MOM to 35 applications, platforms and third-party system management products.
