ASP.NET Futures Release Showcases New Controls, Capabilities

Microsoft has announced ASP.NET Futures May 2007, a collection that includes early versions of new tools for ASP.NET and the Silverlight cross-platform browser plug-in.

The release expands dynamic language support in ASP.NET, adding Managed Jscript to the previously supported IronPython. The capability is built on Microsoft's Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR) project, according to the company.

Microsoft showcased Silverlight 1.1 and the DLR at its recent MIX07 conference in Las Vegas. The technologies sit at the center of the company's strategy for rich Internet application development.

Also included in the Futures release is a pair of ASP.NET server controls for working with Silverlight: one for integrating media into Web apps and another for referencing XAML and JavaScript files.

Another feature is a set of server controls which can grab information about database schemas at runtime and provide customizable display formats.

Microsoft has also developed several new ASP.NET services, including one that enables developers to add search to Web apps with a commercial search engine's API.

The company cautions that the features within the Futures release are early and experimental. It can be downloaded here.
