Microsoft Clarifies Datacenter LE Release Plans

Microsoft Corp. offered some clarification Thursday on how the release schedule of the newly announced Windows Datacenter Server Limited Edition relates to the regular release of Windows .NET Datacenter Server.
Microsoft on Monday unveiled Windows Datacenter Server Limited Edition. The company said the 32-bit operating system, based on the Windows .NET Server or "Whistler" code base, was tuned for 16-32 processor systems.
At that time the company said the high-end operating system would be released in the first half of 2002, which is also when Windows .NET Server is scheduled to be available.
Peter Conway senior director of the Windows .NET Server Solutions Group clarified in an e-mail interview with ENT on Thursday that Windows .NET Datacenter Server will still ship at the same time as the other Windows .NET Servers.
In the Windows 2000 generation of servers, Datacenter Server shipped about seven months after other versions of Windows 2000.
The Limited Edition will become available early in 2002, while all the Windows .NET Server versions, including Windows .NET Datacenter Server, will be available simultaneously later in the first half of 2002.
Meanwhile, Microsoft intends to fold the Limited Edition technology into the Windows .NET Datacenter Server release, Conway said.
"Customers who purchase Windows Datacenter Limited Edition will
receive a free upgrade to the Windows .NET Datacenter Server product of the Windows .NET Server family. There will be 32- and 64-bit versions of the Windows .NET Datacenter Server product," Conway said.
