Compaq Launches NAS, SAN Solutions

Compaq Computer Corp. officials today unveiled two solutions targeted at optimizing network storage capabilities both internally and externally for businesses struggling to manage data needs in the burgeoning Internet economy.
Compaq (www.compaq.com) introduced the TaskSmart N-Series NAS appliance server, a high-performance, industry standards-based product that utilizes Windows 2000 as its platform. Also introduced was the StorageWorks RAID Array 4100 SAN (storage area network), which is designed to simplify storage management across a range of platforms and limit potential system downtime. The 4100 SAN is also upgradable to the N-Series NAS products.
"One of the hot trends in the server market is the drive toward density, a more specialized class of rack mounting servers," said Mary McDowell, vice president and general manager of Compaq’s Industry Standard Server Group. "Compaq’s network attached storage appliance is a device that optimizes file system performance, leverages a customer’s existing network infrastructure, doesn’t require a separate storage network, and is rapid to deploy."
The appliance is designed for out-of-the-box file serving, with capacity ranging from 72 GB to 1 TB. While it is geared toward NT file systems, the appliance also works on NFS file systems.
The 4100 SAN offers improved service levels, cluster support and centralized backup. The 4100 SAN is integrated with industry-standard servers and is compatible with Windows 2000 and NT, Netware, SCO Unix and Linux. - Ted Williams
